BC Lumber Trade Council Responds to New Federal Supports for the Lumber Industry

Vancouver, B.C. – The BC Lumber Trade Council (BCLTC) welcomes the federal government’s new measures to support Canadian lumber producers and workers, announced today by Prime Minister Carney. As Canadian exporters face unjustified U.S. tariffs and sustained market uncertainty, these commitments underscore Ottawa’s recognition of the sector’s economic importance.

Beyond these supports, BCLTC stresses that the most effective and durable solution remains a negotiated softwood lumber agreement between Canada and the United States — one that delivers predictability for companies, workers, and communities on both sides of the border.

“We appreciate the federal government’s recognition that urgent support is required to bridge the current period of uncertainty,” said BCLTC President Kurt Niquidet. “This is a step in the right direction for companies, workers, and the communities that rely on them. But ultimately, a negotiated agreement is the path to long-term stability.”

BCLTC emphasized that program design and delivery will be key to ensuring support measures are rapidly accessible to companies of all sizes and operational profiles. The Council looks forward to collaborating with federal officials to ensure the new initiatives are implemented quickly and effectively, particularly in regions like British Columbia where impacts are most acute.

At the same time, BCLTC underscored the need to align short-term measures with broader efforts to strengthen the forest industry’s competitive position, including securing greater market access, supporting innovation, and ensuring stable, competitive regulatory conditions.
